People with limited mobility who use walking aids, pushchairs or wheelchairs often encounter unexpected obstacles in the city: A narrow sidewalk, a too steep ramp, a high curb, stairs or other obstacles make it difficult to get around by walk. Existing routing services and digital maps often do not provide useful routing guidance for above population groups, because detailed sidewalk accessibility information is missing. This leads to incomplete route suggestions or results that do not always reflect real-world conditions.

As a pilot project between the University of Zurich (Digital Society Initiative and Department of Geography) and the City of Zurich, ZüriACT, aims to remedy this situation. It creates the basis for citizens to systematically and remotely collect spatial accessibility data on sidewalks in Zurich with the help of digital web applications and street view images.

Join us and experience on a walk how the obstacles affect people with mobility impairments and learn more about the project and how you can get involved.
