When knowledge takes shape

More

How can scientific ideas and concepts be made visible and easier to understand? The exhibition at extract presents more than 500 historical and contemporary teaching and research models from the scientific collections of ETH Zurich and the University of Zurich – many of them on public display for the first time.

Discover mathematical plaster models, crystal models, anatomical models made of wax and papier-mâché, and aircraft models from ETH Zurich’s wind tunnel. Each object tells a story about how researchers visualise complex relationships and use models to generate new knowledge.

Since the 19th century, models have played a central role in research and teaching at ETH Zurich. They make the invisible visible, help explain scientific questions and open up new perspectives on the world.
