About 135 years ago, the Sihlfeld cemetery set a milestone by opening Switzerland’s first crematorium. Today, the city of Zurich is reviving that pioneering spirit and introducing two innovative methods for consideration: composting (Terramation) and alkaline hydrolysis (Lavation).

Both methods are resource-efficient and low-emission, and contribute to a more sustainable funeral industry. They are already being used successfully in other countries—but in Switzerland, these approaches are still in their infancy.
