Understanding spinal cord injuries better thanks to AI

Spinal cord injuries can severely impact the lives of those affected. At this booth, you will learn how these injuries are clinically assessed and how data scientists use artificial intelligence to predict whether a patient will be able to walk.

Traumatic spinal cord injury impairs the long-term quality of life of affected patients worldwide and it is only natural that patients early on have questions regarding their recovery prognosis and whether they will be able to live independently in the future. Our team addresses this question through artificial intelligence and mathematical modelling. At our booth visitors can gain an insight into the physiology of the spinal cord, find out how the severity of spinal cord injury is assessed clinically, and how data scientists predict if a patient will be able to walk again. In hands-on experiments visitors can construct small bead models illustrating the serial nature of a spinal cord and put their doctor’s instinct to the test in our recovery prediction quiz presented on screen – maybe you can beat the algorithm?
