What’s in a name?
What’s in a name? More than you might think. Names shape identities, evoke associations, and tell stories. People, places, and institutions are given new names when their role, their environment, or their sense of self changes. But how does a good name come about—and what makes it meaningful?
The Ethnographic Museum at the University of Zurich is currently searching for a new name. In this creative workshop, we explore stories of renaming and reinvention. Using objects from the museum’s collection as a starting point, participants will develop an alter ego and find a fitting new name for it. What characteristics, memories, or ideas are embedded in this name? What stories does it tell? The insights and ideas gained will serve as inspiration to collaboratively develop bold, surprising, and forward-looking name suggestions for the museum.
