What your skin tells you

Our skin not only protects us from environmental influences, it also plays an important role in metabolism and heat regulation. View different skin types under the microscope and learn how communication between skin cells can be used to diagnose and treat skin diseases.

Communication holds our world together. This also applies to the world of cells that make up our body. The flow of information between cells is as diverse as the many forms of communication we see on our planet. Sometimes a flow of single ions can be as effective as a messenger substance (e.g. a protein molecule) made up of hundreds of atoms. We present our study on “extracellular vesicles”. These are a kind of envelope for messenger molecules when they travel outside the cell. We also show a patented device for purifying these vesicles.

Since our research consortium SKINTEGRITY.CH has its focus on skin, we will show you possible applications of this intercellular communication in the therapy and diagnostics of skin diseases in the form of a shuffleboard game. You can also observe different skin types under the microscope to better understand the impact of those skin types and of cellular communication on our skin health.
