Just like humans use their eyes and sense of balance to navigate the world, our humanoid robot relies on cameras and sensors to perceive its surroundings. But seeing the world is only the first step. To interact naturally with people, a robot must also understand the meaning of what it sees.
At the Mobile Robotics Lab, we are developing technologies that allow humanoid robots to explore unfamiliar environments, identify objects and connect them to human language. Instead of giving precise coordinates, people can simply ask for an object, such as an apple on a table, and the robot can work out where to find it.
