In street spaces, bicycles, cars, and trams should flow smoothly, while at the same time the design and atmosphere should be pleasant for people. Planting should provide habitat for birds, hedgehogs, and other species, and the soundscape should be as quiet and soothing as possible—and, in any case, of high quality. It is difficult to take all these concerns into account at the same time. The quality of sounds, for example, is usually specified only in abstract terms.
To support a more holistic redesign of street spaces, we develop virtual 3D simulations. In the AudioVisual Room of the Large-scale Virtualization and Modeling Lab, you can virtually experience a neighborhood in Zurich. You walk through the streets while hearing realistic, spatial sounds. You’ll also gain insight into the technology used to create these simulations.
