Since the war began in Sudan in 2023, many buildings, roads and heritage sites have been damaged or destroyed. But there are areas that are now considered relatively safe, and people are beginning to return. Recovery now depends on housing, infrastructure and access to construction materials. Using Khartoum as an example, this talk looks at current reconstruction efforts and the challenges they face: shortages of building materials, the search for lower-cost alternatives – and the risks posed by war debris and hazardous materials.
