Images do not merely show what is true. They also portray what is claimed to be true. This was already the case in the early modern period: works of art could convey knowledge, suggest authority, raise doubts, or allow for ambiguity. This makes clear just how relevant these old strategies remain today: even on social media and in political propaganda, images are used to compete for visibility, credibility, and interpretive authority.
