Having Children – The Future Meets the Present
Will children in the future be genetically engineered and conceived in artificial wombs? Learn what is currently possible and permitted in reproductive medicine, and reflect on where the potential and limitations lie in the future.
What challenges do individuals or couples face when they cannot or do not wish to have children? Which technologies are seen as a source of hope, and which as a risk? And how do we talk about a future in which reproduction is increasingly shaped by technology? These questions are no longer being explored solely by researchers, but also by visitors of Scientifica.
At our booth, visitors can explore the present and future of having children. One section is dedicated to the current reality of reproductive decisions: Which technologies are permitted in Switzerland, and which are not? For which treatments do people travel abroad? How are fertility and birth rates changing? Through interactive scenarios, visitors can explore different paths to parenthood.
A second section looks toward the future. Three visionary objects showcase possible technologies of tomorrow. They are fictional but based on real research. They invite visitors to reflect on control, optimization, and self-determination: To what extent do we want to control pregnancy and reproduction? What possibilities do we desire, and where do we draw the line?
The exhibition combines scientific research with speculative design and creates a space where knowledge is not only conveyed but also reflected upon collectively. It invites visitors to ask questions, exchange perspectives, and actively contribute to shaping the future of having children.
