If you look at a plant closely, you will notice tiny hair covering the surface of leaves and stems. These appendages are called trichomes. They can have different shapes depending on plant species. While in some plants trichomes look like tiny spikes, other species can have lollipop-shaped or branched structures. Trichomes are not only fancy-looking but also very useful for plant\u2019s self-protection. They serve as fur coats during harsh winter colds, protect from UV radiation by reflecting excessive sunlight, secrete toxic and bitter compounds to repel insects and herbivores.<\/p>\n
In this workshop you will microscopically observe trichomes of well-known weeds (stinging nettle, clover…) and edible plants (mint, tomato, cabbage…), and learn more about the role of trichomes in plant growth and development.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
