When one thinks of monastic music, Gregorian chants often come to mind. But monastic music did not end with the Middle Ages. This presentation sheds light on musical life in women\u2019s monasteries during this century and the last. The Schola of the Institute of Musicology will perform specific works to accompany the lecture.<\/p>\n
In Switzerland in particular, world-famous musical manuscripts were created in monasteries during the Middle Ages, and the study of these manuscripts is a subfield of musicology. As a result of church reforms, musical practice underwent repeated and significant changes, leading to new compositional innovations that continue to this day.<\/p>\n
Creativity was particularly essential in women\u2019s monasteries, as the music \u2013 typically written for four voices \u2013 had to be adapted for an all-female ensemble. Furthermore, music played a role even outside of the liturgy.
