SUMMARY:Wie der Mensch die Schrift prägt
DESCRIPTION:Writing depicts language graphically. It is a human invention\, an artifact. Nevertheless\, there is a lot of nature in it: Used by humans for thousands of years\, the world’s scripts are marked by their biological\, cognitive and social nature. One example: At first\, the forms of characters were very pictorial and visually resembled the objects that were to be written down – because this made them easier to invent and remember. But why are characters today largely abstract? Because pictorial signs are often visually complex and therefore difficult to write\, and people strive to write with as little effort as possible. In this short lecture\, we will use examples to show how human nature has made writing what it is today.

SUMMARY:Was wir von Kartoffelchips lernen können
DESCRIPTION:We are interested in how we can arrange molecules in relation to each other. Not so easy when you can’t touch molecules directly! But we believe that the shape of a molecule – its three-dimensional topography – can help us. A trick that potato chips have taught us. But how can we bend and shape molecules so that they take on an appropriate structure? And what does this mean for the future of plastics and electronics? In this lecture\, we’ll take you on a journey into the world of molecules and materials science. Together\, we’ll discover shape concepts\, translate them into the molecular world\, and look at what novel properties result.

SUMMARY:Forschung naturgetreu fotografieren
DESCRIPTION:Photographs are used for a variety of purposes in the sciences. Especially in research and teaching\, photography has the task of making an object or situation visually accessible to an audience in a lifelike manner – regardless of time and place. But can photography really reproduce the desired motif true to nature? What influence do light and shadow and the chosen lens have? What are the prerequisites for a successful photograph? Using impressive image examples from veterinary medicine\, we explore together the possibilities and limitations of photography as a visual communication medium in the sciences.

SUMMARY:Warum ist COVID-19 mehr als «nur eine Grippe»?
DESCRIPTION:Since last year\, the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic has drastically changed our lives. Since certain symptoms of COVID-19 are very similar to those of seasonal flu\, the question of whether COVID-19 is the same as flu kept coming up. But what exactly are the similarities and differences between these diseases that have necessitated drastic action? In this Science Café\, we take on this question and look directly at the science behind the pandemic. In particular\, we compare influenza and Sars-CoV-2 from a medical and epidemiological perspective – a project that emerged from a collaboration between the Machine Learning & Computational Biology group at ETH\, Laboratory Medicine at Unispital Basel\, and the Applied Microbiology Research group at the University of Basel. \nPanelists: \n\nDr. Juliane Klatt\, Postdoctoral Researcher\, Machine Learning & Computational Biology Lab\, ETH Zurich\nDr. Tim Roloff\, Bioinformatician\, Department of Clinical Microbiology\, University Hospital Basel and University of Basel\nProf. Martin Siegemund\, Deputy Head\, Intensive Care Medicine\, Department of Aucte Medicine\, University Hospital Basel\nDr. Karoline Leuzinger\, Postdoctoral Researcher\, Department of Clinical Virology\, University Hospital Basel and University of Basel\nDr. Catherine Jutzeler\, Senior assistant\, Machine Learning & Computational Biology Lab\, ETH Zurich\, Moderation

SUMMARY:Liquid Theology – Theological Beer Camp
DESCRIPTION:Religiosity – experience or construct? Naturally evolving – or shaped or even deformed by dogmas and institutions? How does religiosity relate to religious systems in late modern times? And how does theology as an academic disciplin fit in? Where does digitalization promote the fluidity and dynamics of lived theology and religion? \nTheological discussions have long been associated with beer\, and in recent times increasingly so again (https://trippfuller.com/podcasts/). The Theological Beer Camp invites you to join in the brewing of theology: in dialogue and across denominations\, or simply to listen to how theology is researched\, what it is and where its social relevance lies. \nWith: \n\nDr. Sabrina Müller\, Managing Director University Research Priority Program «Digital Religion(s)»\, Project Manager: «Hermeneutic dynamics of individual and communal Christian meaning-making in a digital culture»\, University of Zurich\nDr. Jasmine Suhner\, Project Manager: «Interreligious Challenges and Learning in a Digital Society»\, UFSP «Digital Religion(s)»\, University of Zurich

SUMMARY:Planet Formation On-Board a Parabolic Flight
DESCRIPTION:How do planets form? Thousands of extrasolar planets have been discovered to date\, and yet we still do not know how planets form out of the galaxy’s raw materials of interstellar gas and dust. Astrophysicists have made some progress by using supercomputer models to try to interpret new exciting images of planetary nurseries – protoplanetary disks of gas and dust. The problem\, though\, is that the conditions in interstellar space are so different from those on Earth that we do not know how familiar compounds\, such as rock or ice\, would behave. In particular\, extremely low material density and ultra-weak gravity are hard to reproduce in the laboratory. In recent years experiments have been carried out on-board parabolic flights\, which can attain zero gravity conditions. The resulting conditions are thus much closer to those in protoplanetary disks. Combined with supercomputer simulations\, these experiments are advancing our understanding of how planets form. Researchers at the University of Zurich\, in collaboration with the University of Bern\, are pioneering this new field of research thanks to parabolic flights hosted by the UZH SpaceHub.

SUMMARY:Klonen statt Sex? Der Mensch zwischen Natur und Künstlichkeit bei M. Houellebecq
DESCRIPTION:Michel Houellebecq draws a very negative picture of human intimate relationships in his novels. In modern times\, sexuality has become an object of consumption and exchange\, which leads to enormous inequality. Certain people have an excess of sexual contacts\, while others are denied access to sexuality. At the same time\, the family as a social basis is breaking down. In “Les Particules élémentaires” (1998) and “La Possibilité d’une île” (2005)\, the author sketches a pessimistic vision of the future in which humanity overcomes the problems of sexuality by switching to reproduction through cloning. With his reference to biological knowledge\, Houellebecq is part of a tradition that began in the 19th century and is associated with authors such as Balzac and Zola. His work exemplifies the contribution literature can make to human reflection on its place between naturalness and artificiality.

SUMMARY:Metamaterialien – Lego für Fortgeschrittene
DESCRIPTION:Nature is often leaps and bounds ahead of us when it comes to creating ideal material behavior: from the high hardness of insect carapaces to extremely flexible palm trees to wafer-thin eggshells that can withstand enormous forces. Inspired by nature\, we develop so-called “metamaterials” whose extreme\, special or unusual properties can be controlled by their internal structure. Just as we assemble Lego bricks into complex buildings\, we develop structural building blocks whose details ultimately make up the properties of a metamaterial. These include very light yet particularly stiff and strong materials\, ceramics that can be compressed like sponges\, or smart materials that can transform themselves. In the lecture\, we will introduce the exciting world of metamaterials and present various successful examples.

SUMMARY:Blutgefässe: Der heilige Gral des Lebens
DESCRIPTION:Blood vessels form a complex network of transport pathways through which blood circulates and reaches every region of our body. Together with the heart\, they form the circulatory system that supplies all tissues with oxygen and nutrients. Functioning blood vessels are indispensable for a healthy life. But our vessels are also subject to malfunction. Vascular diseases are the most common cause of death worldwide. The risk factors that can be influenced include high blood pressure\, diet\, obesity\, smoking and excessive alcohol consumption. Vascular aging\, on the other hand\, cannot be influenced. Even though medicine has already made great progress in the field of vascular diseases\, we have so far only been able to delay pathological changes in the vessels – such as atherosclerosis – but not to stop them.

SUMMARY:The water cycle in the forest
DESCRIPTION:We visit our study area (part of the “Waldlabor Zürich”)\, which is about a 10-minute walk from the Hönggerberg campus and easily accessible via forest paths. Together we go on a one-hour “forest walk” during which we learn about the essential components of the water cycle in the forest and “follow” a raindrop on its journey: Part of the rain is caught in the treetops and evaporates back into the atmosphere\, another part is drained along the trunk\, and another part of the water is temporarily stored in the litter\, in the lying deadwood and in the forest floor itself. Only a small part of all raindrops then reaches the subsoil and is absorbed again by the plants after hours\, days\, weeks or years and evaporates or ends up as runoff in the stream. Understanding these processes helps us to assess the impact of climate change on the water balance of Swiss forests.

SUMMARY:Meister Klapperstorch im 21. Jahrhundert
DESCRIPTION:Parenthood is a miracle of nature! An egg and a sperm combine their genetic material to form a new organism\, the pregnancy results in the birth of a new life. The development of mankind has been taking place in this way for thousands of years. However\, for various reasons\, the possibility of having children naturally has decreased in recent decades. Assisted reproductive technologies (ART) offer new ways to address infertility. They include cryopreservation of eggs\, sperm and embryos\, artificial insemination\, hormonal stimulation and in vitro production of embryos. ART is not only used in humans; domestic animals\, livestock\, and wildlife sometimes fail to produce offspring and ART is used. When fertility centers and animal sciences collaborate in research\, promising methods emerge\, including methods to save endangered species. A short talk on the role of the rattling stork in the 21st century.

SUMMARY:Mit Genipin Pferdesehnen kurieren
DESCRIPTION:Although tendon injuries in horses are very common\, promising therapies are still lacking. The often traded stem cell therapy has great potential. However\, it leaves many questions about its exact effect unanswered and has therefore not been widely accepted to date. Another approach is the therapy with Genipin\, which was originally extracted from Gardenia plants. Genipin is a so-called collagen crosslinker\, whereby collagen is the building block of tendons. Genipin can be used to tissues can be mechanically strengthened. In order to investigate this beneficial effect for the therapy of tendon injuries in horses\, we have conducted initial treatment trials with Genipin at the Clinic for Equine Surgery at the UZH. In the short lecture we present our experiences and findings of this new method.

SUMMARY:Mit radioaktiven Arzneimittel Krebs bekämpfen
DESCRIPTION:Artificial radioactive isotopes of a natural element can be used to visualize and treat specific cancer cells in the body. All that is needed is to administer tiny amounts of a so-called radiopharmaceutical to the patient. Thanks to specific receptors\, the radiopharmaceuticals accumulate only in the tumor but not in healthy tissue. A prominent example is the use of radioactive iodine to diagnose and treat thyroid cancer. Recently\, new radiopharmaceuticals for the detection and treatment of prostate cancer and neuroendocrine tumors have been successfully tested in the clinic. In this lecture\, we will take you along the development path of a radiopharmaceutical from the laboratory to the clinic.

SUMMARY:Wie wir mit Maschinen sprechen
DESCRIPTION:The robot Pepper gives us information in the mall\, we ask Siri for the next pizzeria\, and service robots are used in nursing: What are the characteristic features of communication with machines? What are the differences between this type of interaction and human-to-human communication? How do we perceive such interactions? Is one artificial\, the other natural? In this talk\, these and other questions around human-machine communication will be addressed from a linguistic perspective\, and different contexts of use will be presented in which the dialogic ability of machines plays an important role. This will be done in two steps: Initially\, dialogues with speech assistants will be considered\, then the focus will be on interaction with humanoid robots.

SUMMARY:Papierfaltkunst trifft Mathematik
DESCRIPTION:Perhaps you’ve seen how a simple sheet of paper can be skillfully folded into an artistic three-dimensional object\, such as an animal figurine\, an intricate decorative ornament\, or a delicate box. People who have mastered this craft are true artists. But obviously there are also laws and rules behind it. Not every folding of a sheet of paper produces a work of art. Rules and regularities – that is reminiscent of mathematics! Is there more to it than that? Oh yes\, and paper folding can even solve mathematical problems! Want to learn more and are you curious where similar ideas can be found in industry application problems? We’ll show you!

SUMMARY:Männlich\, weiblich\, natürlich\, künstlich?
DESCRIPTION:How many sexes are there? Can you turn a female animal into a male\, or vice versa – and why is it not so easy to get rid of the production of male chicks? What have researchers observed after removing the male plants from a plant species with separate sexes – and why do they always stress that you should avoid the so-called “naturalistic fallacy” when talking about gender roles in society and using the word “natural”? These topics are explained using examples from current research.

SUMMARY:Neue Erkenntnisse bei seltenen Krankheiten durch KI
DESCRIPTION:Only a few of the approximately 7\,000 rare disease types are currently already medically researched. This is a particular challenge for people suffering from rare diseases and for their environment. On the one hand\, it usually takes a long time until a diagnosis is available at all. On the other hand\, there are usually only a few treatment methods available\, which are also often associated with high costs. \nArtificial intelligence is capable of evaluating large amounts of data reliably and efficiently and thus arriving at new insights. The potential areas of application in medicine are immense and range from diagnostics and therapy to the development of new treatment methods. This panel discussion will explore the question of how AI can improve the situation of individuals with rare diseases. In addition\, selected legal and ethical issues that arise when AI is used in medicine will be discussed. \nMit: \n\nProf. Brigitte Tag\, Competence Center MERH\, Chair of Criminal Law\, Criminal Procedure Law and Medical Law\, RWI UZH\nProf. Matthias Baumgartner\, Chair of Metabolic Diseases\, MeF UZH / USZ / University Children’s Hospital Zurich\nProf. Michael Krauthammer\, Chair of Medical Informatics\, MeF UZH / USZ\nMarina Villa\, Moderation

SUMMARY:Krebstherapien als Korrektur des «Fehlverhaltens der Natur»
DESCRIPTION:Cancer develops when the processes that lead to natural cell division and cell renewal go awry. Cancer research investigates the phenomena of “what’s going wrong” and where the molecules are that exhibit misbehavior. It also shows how cancer research contributes to the search for new therapeutic approaches. It will be explored how the “misbehavior” of nature can be corrected\, for example\, to prevent the unchecked growth of cancer cells. It will also address the issue that what are often perceived as “artificial” interventions (drugs\, radiation\, surgery) are designed to correct “misguided natural phenomena” such as those that occur during cancer development. \nPanelists: \n\nProf. David Nadal\, MD\, co-president of the Academy of Human Medicine\, president of the Zurich Cantonal Ethics Committee.\nProf. Dr. Maries van den Broek\, Professor of Tumor Immunology and Vice Dean Research University of Zurich\nDr. med. SUMMARY:Wellen bewegen die Welt
DESCRIPTION:Waves are omnipresent in our lives and are used for a variety of applications – be it in earthquake research\, space exploration\, global communication or medicine. What do all waves have in common and how do they differ? How do we use their properties in our lives? With examples from everyday life and research\, we will show you that many phenomena and applications that seem very different at first glance are based on the same principles. \nFeel free to also visit our Scientifica booth. \nThis guided tour is part of focusTerra’s special exhibition “Waves – Dive in!”

SUMMARY:Vom Gehirn lernen
DESCRIPTION:In recent years\, artificial intelligent (AI) technologies have advanced at an enormous pace and in impressive ways. AI systems are now in every smartphone for speech and image recognition\, in self-driving cars\, and even robots are acting smarter and smarter thanks to their artificial neural networks. Nevertheless\, AI still has a long way to go before it can hold a candle to our human brains. But why is that\, and why is it so difficult to build AI systems that are equally intelligent? What can we learn from human intelligence and our brains as role models to improve AI? We will discuss these and other questions about natural and artificial intelligence in our short talk.

SUMMARY:Die Bahnen von Erdsatelliten bestimmen
DESCRIPTION:Today\, hundreds of thousands of artificial satellites fly around the earth to fulfill scientific\, commercial or military purposes. Among them are satellites\, so-called CubeSat\, that are as big as a truck or as small as a cube with an edge length of only 10 cm. Besides there is only exactly one giant natural satellite orbiting the Earth\, namely the Moon. We show how the orbits of these Earth satellites look like and with what accuracy we can determine them. Whereas in the past we took photos of the satellites\, today we use powerful laser pulses to aim at the satellites or the moon\, or we equip the satellites with a GPS receiver to determine their position.

SUMMARY:Helping Crying Babies and Their Parents!
DESCRIPTION:In this short lecture\, Dr Rocha Martin invites the public to take a tour inside the body. We will stop at all the places where microorganisms live within our bodies\, aiming to understand how they can protect or harm us. The first stop is our skin\, the largest organ we have\, which is covered with microorganisms: the skin microbiota. Then we will travel through the mouth and down our gastrointestinal tract to the colon and the gut microbiota\, a huge and diverse microbial community that has more microbes than the number human cells in the body. Finally\, we will find out how microbes can help crying babies and their parents!

SUMMARY:Das Spiel mit der Illusion
DESCRIPTION:Do not trust your eyes and do not believe what you see – painters are\, after all\, the greatest deceivers! Above all\, illusionist painting aims to deceive the eye of the beholder. Although the picture surface is two-dimensional\, it suggests openings to the inside and outside. It provides views into vast illusory worlds\, things and beings emerge from the picture and conquer the viewer’s space. Reality and fiction interpenetrate in an amazing way. Today\, digital artists achieve such effects with breathtaking perfection. Similar goals were already pursued by their painting colleagues in antiquity. The lecture shows which tricks were used then and now to mislead the viewer’s eye and create so-called trompe-l’œils. We start with works of art from antiquity and end with the so-called parallax effect\, an interactive effect in web design.

SUMMARY:The Artificial Gut - Explore the power of microbes living in our intestine
DESCRIPTION:Trillions of microbes are living in our intestine in very well organised ecosystems\, known as the “gut microbiota”/ “Darmflora”. Why are they there and what do they do? Can we influence them through our lifestyle? \nDuring this lab tour we will explain you how we study the gut microbiota of different persons in the lab using our artificial gut\, the PolyFermS bioreactor system\, developed at ETH. We will explain and discuss how our gut microbiota can influence our health and wellbeing and how we can study and manipulate their function. Visitors will be fascinated by observing and smelling the gut microbiota directly from the PolyFermS reactor\, by seeing how those microbes can be isolated and cultivated in absence of oxygen and how they can be further characterized and studied in the lab for their potential powerful functions to promote health. \nJoin our guided tour to discover more! \nThe lab tour will take approximately 45 minutes including walking time from the meeting point at ETH Main building to the lab. Wearing a mask is compulsory.

SUMMARY:Evolution von Bakterien – was uns künstliche Experimente im Labor über natürliche Vorgänge lehren können
DESCRIPTION:Bacteria are ideal organisms to study evolution in real time. Bacteria always occur in thousands\, reproduce quickly and therefore have an enormous potential to adapt to environmental changes. These adaptations can be studied in artificial laboratory systems. As an example\, we use the evolution of antibiotic resistance. How do bacteria become resistant to antibiotics\, which we so urgently need to \ntreat infections? What role do evolutionary processes play in this? Can we prevent or at least reduce the evolution of antibiotic resistance? Together we will discuss these questions and develop evolutionary approaches that could contribute to solving the problem.

SUMMARY:Künstlich Digital? Öffentliche Bildung nach Corona
DESCRIPTION:During the Corona lockdown in spring 2020\, schools switched to different forms of remote learning. Most of the time this was done digitally. Quite a few hoped that this would provide a digitization boost for schools outlasting the lockdown. But what has actually remained? On the one hand\, you find those who welcome a return to a seemingly “natural” state of school and view digital media as an “artificial” intrusion. On the other hand\, there are efforts to establish digital possibilities as the “new normal” at educational institutions. \nWhat conclusions can be drawn from the experiences gained with remote learning during the lockdown? Based on these experiences\, how can public education be meaningfully shaped in the future? How can the simple distinction between “artificial” and “natural” be overcome? Join the panel for a discussion of technological\, pedagogical\, and ethical aspects of this issue. \nPanelists: \n\nDr. Klaus Rummler\, Center for Education and Digital Change (PHZH)\nDr. Tobias Röhl\, Center for Education and Digital Change (PHZH)\nProf. Dr. Katharina Maag Merki\, Professor for Theory and Empiricism of School Educational Processes (UZH)\nDaniela Lozza\, Head of Digital Education ZHAW Life Sciences and Facility Management (ZHAW)\nWanja Kröger\, Head of Teaching Office (ZHdK)\nLeo Herrmann\, Corporate Communications (ETH Zurich)\, Moderation
