SUMMARY:STEM? STEM! Take on the challenge.
DESCRIPTION:Take on the challenge and dive into the fascinating world of math\, computer science\, natural sciences\, and technology (MINT). Complete the roughly 30-minute course in the Startbahn 29 tent. Solve tricky puzzles using technologies such as 3D printers\, microcontrollers\, or a thermal imaging camera. \nIn the Startbahn 29 lab\, you can experience what it’s like to be a scientist or an astronaut for a change. Slip into the appropriate outfits and capture this moment in the photo booth. Who knows when you’ll look back on this moment later in life. \nRunway 29 is the experimental lab for young researchers at the Zurich Innovation Park and inspires over 4\,000 children and teens aged 6 to 16 to get excited about STEM every year. Curious? Stop by! \n“Aha” moments and fun learning experiences for young and old are guaranteed. No prior knowledge is required.

SUMMARY:What holds the world together - a view from space
DESCRIPTION:What thoughts go through an astronaut’s mind when he sees the Earth from the outside for the first time? What does he feel at that moment? And what did the spectacular images of distant galaxies trigger in the “father” of the James Webb telescope? \nFrench astronaut Thomas Pesquet spent more than a year of his life on the International Space Station (ISS) during two space missions. In his former position as scientific director of NASA\, ETH professor Thomas Zurbuchen was not only responsible for around 130 space missions\, but also for the realisation of the James Webb Telescope\, which delivers spectacular images from space. \nFrom Thomas Pesquet and Thomas Zurbuchen you will learn how to become an astronaut\, what life in space feels like – but also how views from and into space can change perception and life on Earth. The two speakers will also tell you what it takes to realise projects in space and when they themselves expect to discover life beyond Earth. \nThe talk will be moderated by Anna Maltsev\, a member of the ETH Zurich’s University Communications team. Afterwards you will have the opportunity to ask questions.

SUMMARY:The power of the sun
DESCRIPTION:Since the beginning of human history\, the Sun has been central in making sense of our existence. As the source of life\, the Sun has been worshipped\, mystified\, harvested and feared. With the Copernican Revolution\, we realized that the Earth – and consequently\, humanity – is in fact not at the center of the universe. Indeed\, the Sun has eclipsed the Earth. But that has not always been the case. How was the Sun conceived and visualized throughout the centuries? And what do these imaginations of the “immense lemon yellow disc”\, as Vincent van Gogh described the Sun\, tell us about our place under it?

SUMMARY:Endlich ohne Rückenschmerzen
DESCRIPTION:Who does not know back pain? Low back pain is one of the most common diseases worldwide. Over 85 percent of people are affected at some point in their lives. There are many different causes of back pain. Thus\, a one-size-fits-all treatment strategy is therefore unsatisfactory and ineffective. \nThis Science Café describes back pain from the point of view of those affected and presents current diagnostic methods and common treatment approaches. In addition\, the speakers will discuss current research approaches aimed at improving the treatment of back pain in the long term. Among other things\, they will present a project in which the choice of treatment is optimized by means of machine learning. \nSpeakers \n\nDr Christian Lanz\, Head of Neurology\, Schulthess Clinic\nDr Ute Kretzschmar\, Senior Consultant Neurology\, Schulthess Clinic\nDr Tamas Fekete\, Head of Spinal Surgery\, Schulthess Clinic\nDr Fabio Galbusera\, Head of Spine Research Group\, Schulthess Clinic\n\nModerator\nDr Zina-Mary Manjaly\, Head of Neurology\, D- HEST ETH Zurich & Schulthess Klinik

SUMMARY:Neue Technologien zur Bewältigung von Stress am Arbeitsplatz?
DESCRIPTION:Virtual reality to prevent stress? Keyboard and mouse data to detect stress in real time at the workplace? This is already possible today. Why technology nevertheless does not solve all problems and how we can effectively prevent chronic stress at work. \nIn an interactive workshop on stress management with new technologies\, we offer you insights into our research at the Mobiliar Lab for Analytics at ETH Zurich. You can try out a training session on coping with stress: Immerse yourself in a virtual world with virtual reality glasses\, which give you feedback on the state of your physical relaxation during the training. This effectively supports the learning of the relaxation technique.

SUMMARY:Nuclear fusion: making a star on earth
DESCRIPTION:One of the crucial challenges for humanity is to develop clean sources of energy that are available to all and compatible with sustainable development. Nuclear fusion is the energy source of the sun and the other stars. It has enormous potential to help us meet this challenge. Moreover\, research into nuclear fusion is a virtuous example of global cooperation in science. The pinnacle of which is ITER\, the project that aims to demonstrate its scientific and technological feasibility. The last leg of the research journey we are embarking on is the development of fusion power plants that might one day supply electricity from renewable energy. \n

SUMMARY:The Dark Universe
DESCRIPTION:Recent progress in observations have shown that our universe is dominated by two mysterious components called dark matter and dark energy. Under the action of gravity\, they hold the universe together but also pulls it apart. The nature of these ingredients is unknown and poses some of the most pressing questions in fundamental science today. Yet\, several new large experiments aim to shed light on these mysteries. We will describe the properties of these dark components and explain how they differ from ordinary matter. We will then show how they affect the evolution of our universe and how scientists are shedding light on their dark nature with new telescopes.

SUMMARY:Von Affensprachen zur Menschensprache
DESCRIPTION:Biologically speaking\, humans belong to the great apes. But why do we differ so fundamentally in our ability to communicate from chimpanzees\, bonobos or gorillas? New results of behavioural research show that the differences are probably not that big and many of the building blocks of human language ability can already be recognised in rudimentary form in our closest relatives. The factors that led to the evolutionary transition from ape to human language are the subject of today’s research. The ability to cooperate – particularly highly developed in humans – seems to have been a driving force.

SUMMARY:Digital Health Design: Gemeinsam die digitale Gesundheitsversorgung der Zukunft gestalten
DESCRIPTION:Digitalization is transforming the healthcare system\, bringing forth both new challenges and opportunities. This is where the Digital Health Design Living Lab (DHD Living Lab) comes into play\, driving innovative projects at the intersection of digitalization\, health\, ethics\, and design. Experts from three Zurich universities (ZHdK\, UZH\, ZHAW)\, representatives from the healthcare system\, patient organizations\, and the public collaborate together. \nThe primary goal of the DHD Living Lab is to develop more appealing\, efficient and effective technologies and solutions for the healthcare sector. The design discipline plays a crucial role in this endeavor\, providing fresh perspectives and novel approaches to the interdisciplinary\, user-centered\, and holistic design of tailored\, digital applications aimed at maintaining\, promoting\, and restoring physical\, cognitive\, and mental health. \nDuring the DHD Living Lab workshop\, interactive prototypes and approaches from ongoing research and development projects can be tested and explored (e.g.\, digital movement games\, decision-making aids\, or hybrid design research methods in the health tech field). Together\, future scenarios will be discussed and explored. \nJoin us in shaping the future of digital healthcare!

SUMMARY:Kristalle & Mineralien erforschen
DESCRIPTION:Crystals and minerals sparkle and shine in all colors. However\, when we want to identify a mineral\, its color can be deceptive because there are many green or red minerals\, for example. Therefore\, we need to consider other characteristics such as shape and hardness when identifying minerals. SUMMARY:How our brain processes information
DESCRIPTION:The brain of each one of us is a network composed of hundreds of billions of neurons. A total or hundreds of trillions of synapses connect these neurons and transmit electrical signals from one cell to another. In reaction to stimulus\, waves of electrical activity traverse the network of neurons\, processing the incoming stimulus signal. Tools provided by the field of mathematics called algebraic topology enable us to detect and describe the rich structure hidden in this dynamic tapestry. \nDuring this talk\, I will guide you on a mathematical mystery tour of what topology has revealed about how the brain processes information.

SUMMARY:Daten vor Gericht
DESCRIPTION:We live in a society in which digital technologies increasingly influence our everyday lives. How do courts deal with this\, or to what extent do data and statistics also play a role in courts? Are courts allowed to rule against empirical evidence? Does the law impose requirements on the quality of data? What does the federal constitution say? Are we on the way to robot courts? The short lecture explores these and other questions on the basis of exciting legal cases.

SUMMARY:Wie hoch ist das Erdbebenrisiko in der Schweiz?
DESCRIPTION:Earthquakes shake the world without warning. Triggered by a sudden release of stress along faults in the earth’s crust\, they can have far-reaching consequences: damaged or collapsed houses\, injured people and\, in the worst case\, even fatalities. In Switzerland and neighbouring countries\, severe quakes occur on average every 50 to 150 years. Therefore\, they are less frequent than other natural disasters such as landslides\, floods or avalanches. Nevertheless\, they are considered the natural hazard with the greatest risk in Switzerland. \nThe first publicly accessible earthquake risk model of Switzerland shows what impact earthquakes can have. It creates a valuable basis for the population\, authorities and businesses to better prepare Switzerland for earthquakes and to cope with them in the event of an incident. What factors make up the earthquake risk? Where is the highest earthquake risk? What to do when the earth shakes? Find out the answers to these questions and more in our short lecture. \n

SUMMARY:Gespräche mit Überlebenden
DESCRIPTION:Where would we be without memories? They are central elements of a biographical construction of meaning and identity and hold our life world together. But what happens when memories are painful? What if they are connected with traumas that go back to state injustice and are perhaps not even expressible? \nMemories are always individual and social at the same time; they are based on personal experiences whose narrative is shaped and also changed in a social context. What happens when the context changes and what was long repressed becomes public discourse? When survivors become contemporary witnesses in public? \nThree experts who have conducted biographical interviews in very different historical contexts will discuss this: \nPanelists \n\nThe social anthropologist Anna Fersztand lived with her grandfather\, the Holocaust survivor Jakob Fersztand\, during Corona and made a short film about it.\nThe historian Loretta Seglias was head of research at the UEK Administrative Versorgungen and realised the project “Faces of Memory” together with victims of compulsory social measures.\nThe religious educator and youth worker Stefan Heinichen is a member of the Federal Commission against Racism. As part of a working group\, he developed the teaching material “Jenische\, Sinti\, Roma – Zuwenig bekannte Minderheiten in der Schweiz” (Yenish\, Sinti\, Roma – Too little known minorities in Switzerland).\n\nModerator\nGregor Spuhler

SUMMARY:Meine Daten in der Medizin – was leisten sie\, warum soll ich sie hergeben?
DESCRIPTION:Those who enter a hospital or receive medical treatment are frequently being asked to release their health-related data for research. Some patients may ask themselves: Why should I make my data and samples available for research purposes? What will happen to them? How is my data protected? Who benefits from the knowledge that is obtained? What do I personally gain from donating data like donating blood? \nIn this panel discussion\, distinguished experts will shed light on how data and digitization are playing an increasingly important role in modern medicine. Further we discuss the motivation to make individual health-related data available to research. The audience is invited to actively participate in the discussion. \nPanelists: \n\nProf. Beatrice Beck Schimmer\, Vice President Medicine Zurich\, University of Zurich\nProf. Elisabeth Stark\, Vice President Research\, University of Zurich\nDr. Katrin Crameri\, Director SPHN Coordination Center\, Basel\nProf. Harald Gall\, Dean of the Faculty of Economics\, Business Administration and Information Technology\, University of Zurich\nProf. Catherine Jutzeler\, Head Biomedical Data Science Lab\, ETH Zürich\nProf. Michael Krauthammer\, Chair of Medical Informatics\, Department of Quantitative Biomedicine\, University of Zurich\n\nModeration:\nBeat Glogger\, freelance science journalist

SUMMARY:Blutkrebspatient:innen zielgerichtet behandeln
DESCRIPTION:In Switzerland\, more than 1\,100 patients die every year from leukaemia and so-called lymphomas\, malignant lymphocytes in the lymph nodes or bone marrow. Despite the wide range of treatment options\, there is a great need to optimise the choice of therapy for blood cancer patients who are affected by a relapse. This is exactly what we aim to do with our research project “INTeRCePT”. We present our study with patients treated at the Children’s Hospital Zurich and the University Hospital. \nINTeRCePT is a project of the translational research center The LOOP Zurich

SUMMARY:Mit Holz hoch hinaus
DESCRIPTION:Wood is a natural building material with special properties. No wonder\, the renewable material is experiencing a true renaissance. Even high-rise buildings made of wood will soon be built. This is made possible by technological advances in fire protection\, in bonding and joining techniques and in processing. In addition\, the use of wood as a building material allows for the long-term binding of carbon dioxide\, a greenhouse gas\, to be stored in the long term.

SUMMARY:Was die Milchstrasse zusammenhält
DESCRIPTION:Our solar system has been orbiting in our Milky Way since its formation about 4.5 billion years ago. How is this Milky Way structured\, what holds it together and where is our solar system in it? \nThis lecture describes how astronomers study the structure and evolution of the Milky Way. The Milky Way is made up of stars\, gas and elementary particles\, and these components are in a very dynamic equilibrium. Since the formation of the universe\, the Milky Way has grown and its structure and composition has evolved greatly. It will continue to change\, and the distant future of our solar system may depend on it.

SUMMARY:Sölled mir nöd Duzis machä?
DESCRIPTION:Germany and Switzerland are linked not only by their geographical proximity\, but also by their common language. However\, the communicative routines (e.g. greetings) are different and communicative misunderstandings occur again and again in everyday life. How exactly does our communication behaviour differ? Is it true\, for example\, that people in Switzerland are quicker to switch to the familiar “Du” than in Germany\, and how are such differences perceived by the public? \nWe answer these questions based on a research project that investigates communicative patterns in Switzerland\, Germany and Austria. We also present excerpts from newspaper articles\, guidebooks and online comments that deal with this topic and show how the attributions made there can be analyzed empirically.
