SUMMARY:Nachhaltigkeit kommunizieren: Neue Wege\, Wissen zu vermitteln
DESCRIPTION:How can scientific findings on environmental sustainability be communicated in a way that is understandable\, encourages critical thinking\, and opens up new perspectives? Using three projects from the Digitalization Initiative of the Zurich Higher Education Institutions (DIZH) as examples\, we show how science can be made participatory and accessible. \nAugmented Ecospheres uses artistic installations to convey the threat posed by the climate crisis to complex natural habitats. \nAgroPionier employs citizen science and participatory geographic data collection to enable farmers to collectively share knowledge about niche crops\, thereby helping to diversify agriculture. \nPublic Data Lab uses deep learning to visualize the quality of green spaces in the Canton of Zurich by combining Street View images with public perceptions\, thereby opening up new perspectives on urban space. \nLearn about the projects through short presentations and then join the discussion on what is needed to ensure a successful dialogue between science and the public. What role do participatory approaches and digital tools play in ecological transformation? And how can scientific knowledge have a societal impact?

SUMMARY:Legal Cannabis konsumieren
DESCRIPTION:New approaches are needed to promote the responsible use of cannabis. The pilot study “Züri Can – Cannabis with Responsibility”\, conducted by the City of Zurich and the University of Zurich\, therefore examines the effects of obtaining cannabis products from controlled cultivation under regulated conditions on participants’ consumption and health\, and explores regulatory issues. \nAs part of the pilot study\, up to 3\,000 participants can legally purchase Swiss organic-quality cannabis at 20 different retail locations in Zurich. These locations also include 9 social clubs. In addition to purchasing cannabis products\, social clubs offer the opportunity to consume the purchased cannabis on-site and interact with other users. When you visit Didis Social\, you’ll learn more about the background of the project\, the scientific findings of the study\, and how the sale of cannabis products works.

SUMMARY:Speech perception and auditory illusions
DESCRIPTION:Beyond stereo\, the Vivid Sound Lab offers a unique opportunity to dip into naturalistic soundscapes. In the real world\, sounds come from all directions. The 42-loudspeaker dome allows visitors to fully immerse themselves in the acoustic surroundings. \nStep inside and explore how sound behaves in space. Try the sound showers that ‘pour’ audio from all directions. Listen to higher-order spatial compositions that move and unfold around you. Dive into interactive speech paradigms where voices compete with realistic background noise. Take on quick localiser tasks to see if you can tell where a sound is coming from\, wander through ambient and urban soundscapes and play with auditory illusions that reveal just how creative your brain can be when interpreting sound. Throughout the showcase\, we will explain what you can hear\, how these scenes are created\, and why details such as distance\, room acoustics and spatial separation matter. \nBehind all this fun is a serious question: why do so many people struggle to understand speech in noisy places? This is a common difficulty\, even among individuals with no measurable hearing loss\, and can lead to frustration\, withdrawal\, and social isolation. Nevertheless\, the brain is the most advanced technology for understanding speech in noisy environments. We want to understand how the brain navigates a world full of sounds and where it breaks down. Once we understand how hearing\, attention\, and prediction work together\, we may be able to train the relevant functions\, stimulate the underlying networks\, and/or optimise technology to address this societal (health) issue.

SUMMARY:Von Analog zu Digital – Texterkennung mit KI
DESCRIPTION:Reading historical manuscripts and prints can often be a challenge. At the Zurich Central Library\, we use AI-powered text recognition to convert historical collections into digital text formats. This allows us to make them more widely available online and in databases. \nThis tour offers you a glimpse into our digitization center\, where our valuable collections are translated into bits and bytes: high-quality digital versions of the documents form the basis for automatic text recognition. We’ll show you how we scan manuscripts from the 18th or 19th centuries and what precautions we take when digitizing medieval incunabula\, which are as fragile as they are valuable. \nIn the second part\, you’ll learn how we use AI transcriptions specifically to support research and discover our citizen science and editorial projects. You’ll also have the chance to try it out for yourself: use our scanning booth to have your handwritten text deciphered directly by the Transkribus software.

SUMMARY:Do you have Mum's eyes – and Dad's stress?
DESCRIPTION:We are all familiar with the inheritance of physical traits\, such as eye colour\, or genetic predispositions to certain diseases. We also recognize how aspects of personality can be passed on through behaviour and upbringing. But can parental experiences – particularly stressful or traumatic ones – also leave a molecular imprint that influences the next generation? In this presentation\, we explore the biological mechanisms through which stress shapes individuals and\, potentially\, their offspring. We will discuss how stress can have both adaptive and adverse effects at the molecular level\, and consider emerging evidence for its intergenerational transmission. \nFinally\, we will reflect on possible strategies to mitigate these effects and the broader implications for society. \n  \nProf. Katharina Gapp\nAssistant Professor\, Institute for Neuroscience\, ETH Zurich.

SUMMARY:Parkplatz als Testlabor: So werden Zürichs Strassen kühler
DESCRIPTION:How can a parking lot help make Zurich’s streets more climate-friendly? And which types of pavement are truly effective in combating urban heat islands? At the test site near Theater 11\, a parking lot is being transformed into a climate laboratory—the only one of its kind in Switzerland. \nThe City of Zurich and the ZHAW demonstrate how materials such as asphalt\, gravel\, and grass pavers can store heat\, allow water to seep away\, and make urban spaces more pleasant. Experts explain on-site which solutions are currently being tested in civil engineering—and how streets and squares are being adapted to climate change. \nYou’ll get hands-on experience right there on site: Measure the temperature of various surfaces\, test their permeability\, and discover which building materials could make Zurich cooler\, greener\, and more livable in the future. \n  \nMore about the test area:\nPilotfläche Parkplätze und Trottoirs | Stadt Zürich \n

SUMMARY:Neue Technologie für fleissige Bakterien
DESCRIPTION:What happens to our wastewater? Entsorgung + Recycling Zürich (ERZ) invites you to visit the Werdhölzli wastewater treatment plant in Zurich—a state-of-the-art facility with five treatment stages. On a guided tour featuring various stops\, you’ll discover how the Werdhölzli plant is preparing for the future. \nIt all began in 1926 with a simple settling tank. The current Werdhölzli plant was built in the 1980s. Today\, it is the largest wastewater treatment plant in Switzerland: About 2\,200 liters of wastewater flow through it every second\, and during heavy rain\, that figure can rise to as much as 6\,000 liters. \nTo keep pace with population growth and meet legal requirements\, the facility will need to be expanded in the coming years. The pilot phase is currently underway. Using the biological treatment stage as an example\, ERZ demonstrates how technological innovations and capacity expansions are implemented during ongoing operations: from preliminary studies through a pilot plant to implementation.

\n  \nMore about the test area:\nPilotfläche Parkplätze und Trottoirs | Stadt Zürich

SUMMARY:A Language for Everyone?
DESCRIPTION:There are still spots available\, and you can participate even without registering. You’re welcome to drop by spontaneously at any time during our opening hours\, between 4:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m. \nHow do you explore an art movement that was ephemeral\, contradictory\, and radically experimental? The Dada Trail invites visitors to discover the language experiments that took place in 1916 at the historic Cabaret Voltaire\, located at Spiegelgasse 1\, and that later inspired countless new artistic developments. \nThe Dada Trail includes free admission to the exhibition «DadaBetweenLanguages»\, presented in the vaulted cellar of Cabaret Voltaire. Before or after visiting the exhibition\, visitors of all ages can experiment with language just like the Dadaists or adopt the perspective of researchers: What do sound poems sound like? What are all the things you can do with individual letters? How do you decipher barely legible Dada manuscripts? And who or what has been forgotten over the course of history? \nThe Dada Trail also includes the bar\, where visitors can enjoy a coffee or signature drinks such as a Hugo Highball or a Tzara Tzirup\, as well as the Dada Library\, featuring a selection of publications on Dada. \nDada and Cabaret Voltaire are a significant part of Zurich’s city history with international relevance. Dada is one of the most influential avant-garde movements of the twentieth century\, and its ideas continue to resonate today. The Dada Trail offers an ideal opportunity to experience both cutting-edge research and vibrant cultural history firsthand. \n  \nSalome Hohl\, M.A.\nKünstlerische Leiterin Cabaret Voltaire\, Ko-Leiterin SNF-Agora Projekt\nProf. Dr. Sandro Zanetti\nUZH\, Ko-Leiter SNF-Agora Projekt\nProf. Dr. Tomáš Glanc\nUZH\, Mitarbeiter SNF-Agora Projekt\nMonica Unser\, M.A.\nAssistenzkuratorin Cabaret Voltaire \n  \nNote: You may also stop by this event spontaneously without registering beforehand.

SUMMARY:Ewige Ruhe neu gedacht – Bestattungsformen der Zukunft
DESCRIPTION:Burial and cremation are established forms of saying goodbye. But environmental and social developments are giving rise to new options. What might saying goodbye look like in the future? \nAbout 135 years ago\, the Sihlfeld cemetery set a milestone by opening Switzerland’s first crematorium. Today\, the city of Zurich is reviving that pioneering spirit and introducing two innovative methods for consideration: composting (Terramation) and alkaline hydrolysis (Lavation). \nBoth methods are resource-efficient and low-emission\, and contribute to a more sustainable funeral industry. They are already being used successfully in other countries—but in Switzerland\, these approaches are still in their infancy. \nLearn more about these forward-looking funeral options and discuss them with us. We look forward to seeing you at the Old Crematorium Sihlfeld D! \n  \nHave we piqued your interest? You can find further information here:\nIst das die Bestattung der Zukunft?\nTerramation: Hat die Schweiz bald eine neue Bestattungsform? – Wissen – SRF \n
