SUMMARY:When mountains start to move
DESCRIPTION:The Blatten landslide in May 2025 shocked Switzerland. Millions of cubic metres of rock\, ice and debris thundered into the valley\, burying large parts of the village. But how can we predict how far these masses will flow\, and why? \nIn this workshop\, you will discover how researchers at ETH Zurich\, WSL and other institutions around the world study landslides\, debris flows and avalanches. Their goal is to better understand these natural hazards\, assess risks more accurately and improve early warning systems. \nBecome a researcher yourself: Build a LEGO seismometer\, record ground vibrations and discover how these measurements can help detect landslides at an early stage and make warning systems more effective. \n  \nOther events surrounding rockslides at Scientifica:\nBooth: When the mountains rumble and roar\nSaturday\, 29. SUMMARY:Not-so-Late Show: Gemeinsam in Bildung und Tech
DESCRIPTION:Welcome to a live panel show where research meets politics and inclusion is the main focus. Digital technologies are prevalent in higher education\, from lecture recordings and accessibility tools to learning platforms\, apps\, and\, yes\, AI. While technology can open doors for students with disabilities\, it also creates new challenges. \nIn this show\, guests from the fields of research and politics will explore how technology can support the inclusion of students with disabilities in Swiss higher education. The discussion will address three questions: \n1. How inclusive are Swiss universities today? Where do students still face barriers?\n2. Learning with technology: helpful or risky? Rethinking technological dependence through the example of students with disabilities\n3. Studying under pressure: Can or should digital tools support students’ well-being? \n  \nBrian McGowan\nLecturer\, Department of Health Sciences and Technology\, ETH\nLea Sandoz-Mey\nFounder and president of inclusion 360\nCo-managing director Behindertenkonferenz Kanton Zurich\nDr. Katja Saxer\nResearch associate at the PH Bern\, research focus: inclusive education and well-being at school \nModerator:\nDr. Oriane Pierrès\nPost-doctoral researcher at the University of Zurich (Digital Society Initiative)\nCo-founder of Safespace Research (ETH Spinoff) \n  \nWe are committed to make this event as accessible as possible. \n\nInformation about the event room (including photos) can be viewed online.\nThe event will be broadcast via livestream. SUMMARY:MAGIE: Mensch oder KI – wer erzählt die Märchen von morgen?
DESCRIPTION:Once upon a time\, there was a fairy tale that was constantly being reinvented. That’s how the story of MAGIE (Fairy Tales as Points of Reference for Shaping Individual Development Patterns) might begin. Because the MAGIE project keeps fairy tales alive and retells them again and again: \nDuring “MAGIE Storytime\,” we read modern adaptations of fairy tales such as Hansel and Gretel or Prince Fairyfoot and invite children and adults alike to immerse themselves in these fantastical narrative worlds. \nIn the “MAGIE Workshop Report\,” we demonstrate how fairy tales can be reimagined\, adapted\, and linguistically refined using our MAGIE AI Fairy Tale Generator. In doing so\, we ask: Which characters\, motifs\, and values belong in today’s fairy tales? Where is there a need for diversity\, child-friendly language\, and pedagogical care? \nWhether they’re modern adaptations of classics or newly generated stories\, these fairy tales emerge from the interplay of developmental psychology\, cultural and fairy-tale knowledge\, participatory idea generation\, and AI. Visitors gain insights into the creative and scientific process behind MAGIE and learn how AI can be used as a tool for narrative education\, language\, creativity\, and citizen science. \n  \nOther events regarding the “MAGIE” project at Scientifica:\nBooth: Creating knowledge together with citizen science! SUMMARY:Autismus besser verstehen
DESCRIPTION:How do people with autism perceive the world? \nPeople with autism often experience the world differently and show differences for example in perception\, communication\, and social interaction. Researchers are investigating the biological mechanisms underlying these differences and suppose that sensory input is filtered to a lesser extent\, causing some information to be perceived as more relevant and intense\, while other information—such as social cues—is missed. \nThis interactive workshop is co-led by a person with autism and a scientific expert. Participants will learn how knowledge about autism is created and gain insight into how a person with autism perceives the world. Practical exercises involving optical illusions and virtual reality scenes provide fascinating insights into different ways of perceiving the world. \nThe workshop is aimed at adults and children in elementary school and older who would like to learn more about autism. \n  \nOther events by the URPP Adaptive Brain Circuits in Development and Learning and by the Developmental Science Network Zurich at Scientifica: \nScience Café: Attention under pressure – the brain in our digital everyday lives\nSaturday\, 29. SUMMARY:Quantum light from quantum dots
DESCRIPTION:Light is wonderful. It drives life on earth\, travels at record (light) speed\, and sunlight can sometimes even make us happy. But what is light made of? And how can it help shape the technologies of the future? \nIn this hands-on workshop\, you will explore the fascinating world of light through a series of interactive experiments. Measure the colour of light\, discover that light consists of tiny particles called photons\, and learn how scientists can detect and count them. You will also meet quantum dots – tiny crystals that can emit individual photons and could become one of the key building blocks for future quantum technologies\, from secure communication to powerful quantum computers. \nOur brief journey will take us from colorful chemistry to quantum technology. And jointly\, we will approach cutting-edge research questions in a playful and accessible manner. \n  \nThe workshop takes place in englisch; Questions can also be posed in german.

SUMMARY:KEEP IT CO₂OL – Rettet uns High-Tech?
DESCRIPTION:Why is the Earth getting warmer? And what does the gas CO₂ have to do with it? On this family tour\, we will explore these questions together. \nThrough exciting experiments\, you will discover what CO₂ actually is\, how it moves through nature and why too much of it can change the climate. Along the way\, you will learn about the effects this can have on animals\, plants and humans. \nWe will also explore clever ideas that can help reduce CO₂ emissions\, such as electricity generated from solar energy or buildings that use very little energy. You will discover how CO₂ can be removed from the air and stored deep underground. \nTogether\, we will consider the role new technologies can play and what each of us can do to help protect the climate. Look forward to exciting discoveries and surprising insights into the world of climate science. \n  \nHeader: Solar energy harvested on a rooftop (Image: focusTerra).

SUMMARY:Steckt Leben im Licht fremder Welten?
DESCRIPTION:Is there life on worlds that are light-years away? To find out\, we don’t have to travel there—often\, a close look at the light is enough. Researchers use the faint light from distant exoplanets to find clues about their atmospheres\, composition\, and potential conditions for life. This is also the approach of the planned LIFE space mission\, led by ETH Zurich. It could bring us closer to answering the ultimate question: Are we alone in the universe? \n  \nRecorded short lecture

SUMMARY:Kann KI die Gesellschaft lenken?
DESCRIPTION:We’re all familiar with the catchphrases: “Big Data is the new oil” and “Artificial Intelligence (AI) is the new engine”. Furthermore\, AI is considered “our final invention” and heralds the “second machine age”. But what does that actually mean? Where are we headed? How will our society and our lives change? Concepts such as Society 5.0\, the “Internet of Bodies”\, or neurocapitalism illustrate just how far-reaching fantasies of digital control have become today. At the heart of the matter is the question of whether and how people and societies could be controlled by AI. \n  \nRecorded short lecture \n  \nOther events surrounding AI and society at Scientifica:\nBooth: AI TO EYE – Between Code and Conscience\nSaturday\, 29. SUMMARY:Meet Stanley: when AI gets emotional
DESCRIPTION:How many times have you asked Alexa\, Siri\, or ChatGPT the same question? No matter how often we repeat ourselves\, today’s AI assistants stay polite\, patient\, and helpful. But what if an AI became sarcastic\, challenged your opinion or pointed out that you had already asked the same question three times? \nMeet Stanley\, an experimental embodied AI agent designed to explore how people interact to increasingly social and emotionally expressive artificial intelligence. In this workshop\, you will interact with Stanley\, discover how researchers use AI agents to study human behaviour and social interaction\, and discuss the challenges and opportunities of AI that behaves more like a person. \nJoin the conversation\, ask your own questions and explore one of the big questions of the future: How human do we actually want artificial intelligence to become?
