Prof. Dr. Susanne E. Ulbrich, Animal Physiology, ETH Zürich
Lecture in German

Parenthood is a miracle of nature! An egg and a sperm combine their genetic material to form a new organism, the pregnancy results in the birth of a new life. The development of mankind has been taking place in this way for thousands of years. However, for various reasons, the possibility of having children naturally has decreased in recent decades. Assisted reproductive technologies (ART) offer new ways to address infertility. They include cryopreservation of eggs, sperm and embryos, artificial insemination, hormonal stimulation and in vitro production of embryos. ART is not only used in humans; domestic animals, livestock, and wildlife sometimes fail to produce offspring and ART is used. When fertility centers and animal sciences collaborate in research, promising methods emerge, including methods to save endangered species. A short talk on the role of the rattling stork in the 21st century.
