Blutgefässe: Der heilige Gral des Lebens

Prof. J. Pelisek, Leiter Forschung, Klinik für Gefässchirurgie, UniversitätsSpital Zürich
Lecture in German

Blood vessels form a complex network of transport pathways through which blood circulates and reaches every region of our body. Together with the heart, they form the circulatory system that supplies all tissues with oxygen and nutrients. Functioning blood vessels are indispensable for a healthy life. But our vessels are also subject to malfunction. Vascular diseases are the most common cause of death worldwide. The risk factors that can be influenced include high blood pressure, diet, obesity, smoking and excessive alcohol consumption. Vascular aging, on the other hand, cannot be influenced. Even though medicine has already made great progress in the field of vascular diseases, we have so far only been able to delay pathological changes in the vessels – such as atherosclerosis – but not to stop them.
